Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is a treatment to artificially increase hormone levels in the body.
The purpose is to alleviate symptoms caused by the natural decrease in production of hormones by the body due to aging or decreases due to disease or surgery.

The results, being unique, can be patented by the manufacturer and are thus highly profitable.
Premarin, Prempro and Provera are the most widely used examples.
Since natural substances are not patentable, you can see why the synthetic or "artificial" hormones, just like any drug, are more likely to be researched, advertised and promoted by large manufacturers who stand to reap the profits.
